The brick industry in Sri Lanka mainly uses firewood, which contribute to tree felling and deforestation. The traditional brick production processes encompassed low productivity and high biomass consumption which led to economic insecurity among brick makers and serious impacts to the environment. This marks the inception of the case study whcih describes the use of biomass residues to manufacturebricks in Sri Lanka.
The technology discusses in the case study about mixing paddy husk and sawdust to clay in brick making resilting in lower consumption of firewood and improve the quality of bricks has been highly successful.
